Internship with a newspaper/magazine? how?

I am 16 years old and in my high school it's mandatory to have an intership related to your passion and interest. the thing is that i know i want an internship in a magazine or newspaper place but i dont know how to get it. how should i get it? should i get their magazine/newspaper and call and schedule an interview or something and then ask them for an internship? tips and suggestions and steps will be greatly appreciated.

I think I would start by making e-mail inquiries to local papers.  Newspapers usually list the e-mail addresses of their staff--contact the managing editor.  Be sure to use proper English and proofread for errors, and  be specific about what you are looking for, explaining the school requirements.  Include your e-mail and phone number.  

    Another thing that is important is to start keeping a portfolio of your work--one that can be added to throughout your career.  You can keep it in a notebook and/or electronically.
