    "The human lot" is what has been given to the humans for them to work with.

    So it would mean that all humans are able to do is try, and then fail in their attempt.

  3. Humans are fallable. It is human nature to try. It is also human nature to fail at many of them. What makes us great is when we do not let  the failures hold us back.
