Interpreter agencies? What are they?

We need an interpreter for our European vacation. I remember hearing something about interpreter agencies, but I can't find any. Plus how much does an interpreter cost?

What countries are you traveling to?  How are you planning to travel?  More importantly, what is your budget?  Hiring a personal translator could be extremely expensive, especially in western Europe, and especially if the translator(s) is/are expected to travel with you on your journey (salary, room, board, transportation, etc.).  It is not really something done very often in the mainstream.  On a budget trip, it would be next to impossible unless some itinerant foreign language students were looking for a free trip somewhere.  You'll need to provide a little more information before you'll get a more definitive answer.

In eastern Europe, translators often double as "escorts" - again, it can be very expensive.
