  1. You just need an independent variable related to earth science?

    An independent variable is the one that you don't alter or the one you expect is doing the affecting, not being affected.  So, the angle of the earth, the distance of the earth from the sun, the stages of the lunar cycle would all be independent variables.

    For example, if you wanted to look at earth surface temperature and how it relates to the angle of the sun in relation to the surface, the angle of the sun is your independent and the temperature is the dependent, because you're presuming that it depends on the angle.
