Question:

Interpreting volume chart information on Scottrade?

The bars indicating volume on the stock charts are either red, or green, or black. I understand that red bars correlate with a downward price movement, but if there's a buyer for every seller, then what exactly do the different colors represent? And what about the black bars?

  1. Note:  There are always an equal number of shares sold & pruchased. The difference between the red bar and green is if the price went up or down in the time period you're looking at.

  2. Green means a rising share price, red a declining share price, black would be neutral as I understand it.

When there are more buyers or shares purchased than share sold, that makes it green. The market makers have to make up for the unavailable shares purchased beyond the available shares from the corporation.

That means demand that cannot be satisfied!  That means share price rises!

If supply exceeds demand, then the price falls. And if closing price is down from the day before, you have a red bar.

If you are looking at the bar charts, the bars represent the swings in price, highs and lows of the day, with the last price, the closing price being either a higher or lower than the previous close of the preceding day, .. the bar is green for higher closing and red for lower closing and black for same.

That is how I understand it....

Note: There are always an equal number of shares sold & purchased. The difference between the red bar and green is if the float from the corporation of shares to be traded and all other shares to be sold is exceeded by the number of shares purchased, the market maker or broker from the corporation is authorized to buy the excess shares at a premium to the corporation.  This pushes the price of the stock upwards, more supply of buying shares than available shares to be sold, hence ...the green.

If demand of shares to be sold, float plus other shares on the market, exceeds supply, share price falls and that is in red.
