Interstate 5??? Safety?

I need to go from LA to SF a lot, but I'm soo freaked out by I-5. Are there any alternate routes? If not, how can I stay safe? (I'm not driving; my mom is, but I'll tell her...) I'm really afraid of being in cars in general. Gah...over 40,000 deaths a year!!! What should I do?
