I am pretty good with interviews and am qualified for the jobs I interveiw for but I keep getting beat out by people who have subbed in that position. This is very discuraging but I know that is why so I have not given up. Also since I work full time I cannot sub in those positions or afford to be a sub only. Anyone know how to be a shark at an interview and beat these others out who worked in that position?

  1. As a person who is often involved in hiring IA's I am not sure there is a trick to beat out a sub. If someone is subbing in a position and already shown they are a match for the position the hiring team will typically give them the job because it is a known fit. Even if you seem to be a good match we cannot be certain if you have not worked in that position and will always lean to the person who has already proven themselves in that position. Why would we take the risk with someone else if another person if someone else has already proven themselves?

The only possibility that I can think of is that even it you can't sub, but you can connect with the teacher of the classroom in some way to show that your personality etc. would be a good match might help, but you are hugely disadvantaged against someone already doing the job.

  2. Sometimes it is merely policy that the position went out to the public to begin with and many jobs are filled from within or by people who as you say have subbed in the position.  Far to often the choice is already made before you even put in the application.

It is hard to beat out prior experience, but you have not given us the type of position you are interviewing for so it is hard to say if that is the case for that job.

Just keep applying and have a dynamic personality.
