Question:

Into The Woods Audition And Unwilling Parents!

Mmmkay, so my friend told me about an audition for "Into The Woods" on the 2 of Sept. And it's great...except for two things:

My parents have already drawn a "no acting outside school" bit and aren't willing to change no matter how much i love it.

I have no previous experiance besides 3 years of drama classes b/c i'm fairly new to this

...BUT

I CAN act [i've been told very well] and i CAN sing, but it's nothing special. I'm an alto who can go into a bit of mezzo sporano who has no clue which role to audition for.

Any advice?

  1. why dont you try talking to your parents to find out why they dont want you to do acting outside of school.listen to their point of view then get them to listen to yours.

  2. If you go behind your parents back, they'll never allow you to act in or out of school. My advice is to continue to do drama in school, then go for your life in auditions when you've finished. I know it sucks, but there isn't really another way around it.

  3. Baker's wife is caring? Is that why she cheated on her husband with the prince?

I do agree that the Baker's Wife is what you should go for considering your vocal range. Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella might work too. However, all 3 are really complicated characters that goes through a rather intense self-discovery. I'm gld that you appear to be an actor first and a singer second because those are the people that are perfect for Sondheim musicals.

You should show your parents the DVD. You can find it all over youtube. Once your parents sees it, they won't be able to say no. It speaks great volumes on parental relationships and each of the characters represents one of the 7 deadly sins. It's very educational and lots of fun.

  4. stuff your parents its your life!..... audition for every part and see which one you get..;)

  5. Have you told them that?

Give them all the reasons why you want to partake in this activity, and promise to keep your grades up, do more chores around the house, that sort of thing.

If you can't drive yourself, there's the bus, call a taxi service, or carpool with people who are in the show with you, I've had plenty of experience doing that! Someone's always willing!

I LOVE the show Into The Woods! Have seen it proffessionally 5 times!

    For parts to try out for, alto to mezzo-soprano;

Baker's Wife; Probably the second lead woman under the Witch. Very caring and motherly, and she tries to keep the Baker out of Trouble!

If you're younger looking/sounding, Little Red Riding Hood; Self explanitory.

The Stepmother or Stepsisters; Fun quirky parts. All are hilarious, and in the original DVD their costumes are AMAZING.

Jack's Mom is another great part, motherly and her lines are witty and cleverly-crafted.

Good Luck! I say do it anyways! Get lots of rest, and gargle with salt water! Maybe rent the DVD! You'll do great!

EDIT: To poster below me: YES, the Baker's wife is CARING. Why does she sing a whole song, saying that was "Just a Moment" then, and go try to go back to the Baker? Why does she tell Little Red to be careful and assure her that she's safe with the baby? Why does make sure The Baker gets his sweater? Why does she dedicate herself to achieving that baby? She may of cheated, but she realizes her mistake, even though it's too late. Look back to the end of the show when she comes back as a spirit! She also re-assures the Baker that he IS father, and can be when the baby is crying, and everything turns out.

And Cinderella is a high MAJOR soprano, not mezzo-alto, like this girl has stated. Listen to On the steps of the palace, No one is alone, or even the Prologue. No WAY is that anywhere near an alto. I'm sure she could go for her, but it'd be hard, if her voice range is what she said it was.

ONE MORE EDIT (SORRY): I was IN the show as the Baker's Wife! I totally thought I included this at the top! I'm so sad I forgot it! HAH Anyways, GOOD LUCK, AGAIN.
