I have a friend from Guatemala thats been in the US for more than 10 years. Shes been working at a hospital for about 8 years, last week they were bought out. Now the new owners are checking SSN on everyone. She's scared she has to go back to Guatemala. Is there any way or anything she can do to stay or get a work permit or something?

  1. nope,  she has been a law breaker for years cheating the US taxpayers.

They will most likely just fire her.

She better be prepaired to return home.  By 2009 all employers will be required to cross check ssn.

  2. Did she ever apply for asylum?  maybe she might qualify for NACARA.  If she is turned over to the immigration service she might qualify for cancellation of deportation since she has been here for over 10 years.  good luck.

  3. That's something she should have been concerned about 10 years ago. Why didn't she get her work permit before?

Checking SSN's is a GOOD thing. It's not fair to the rest of America that we have to pay taxes and illegal immigrants don't. That's means that our taxes are paying for their children to go to school, for their health care, and they don't have to pay taxes.

As for your friend, encourage her to apply for a work visa if possible so she doesn't lose her job.

Note: Before you jump my case, I want to note that I'm against illegal immigration, not legal immigration. I'm all for legal immigration- it's how our country was made. Illegal immigrants do nothing to help our country or economy- only themselves.

  4. She sounds like she has every reason in the world to be scared.  Apparently she is illegally in this country and now will be found out.  She is subject to deportation for having a Social Security Number that is not hers.

Better for her to leave voluntarily before she is found out.  At least now she has some time for planning rather than to be shipped back at the government's will.

  5. Forgery is a deportable offense.

  6. So who's SS# has she been using all this time? If she is here illegally,it certainly isn't hers.

Using a SS# that does not belong to you is a felony. She could be looking at some jail time when caught.

She cannot apply for a work permit if she doesn't have documentation to be in this country legally.

She needs to return home before she is deported or jailed. If she is deported she will not be able to return.

  7. If she's here illegally, she has no basis for applying for a work permit, and if her SSN is fake or stolen, then there's nothing anybody can do about it.

You could read the instructions to form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization and look under the eligibility classes to find out if you can apply under any of those eligibility classes, but like I said, if your visa to the US is no longer valid, or if you entered illegally to begin with, then you may not apply for a work permit.

  8. She needs to go back and apply the right way. she should not have been working in the first place, sounds to me as if she is also using a fake or stolen s.s number and that is a felony. You are aiding and abedding a criminal if you know she is illegal!!!!

    Report and Deport!!!!!
