I believe I have come up with an idea that could help cars get much better gas mileage. How could I try and spread word about my idea to see if any companies would be interested in researching it?

  1. Build a Proof of Concept and show it around to various manufacturers, including aftermarket companies.

  2. patent it and see if anyone tries to steal it. Seriously try to keep this to yourself and start calling ford headquarters stuff like that. You want to make sure you get your end of the deal on this invention. Dont just give it away.

  3. Just a quick search on google found this

    http://www.quickproductreviews.com/water...

you should check it out, they review products that allow you to save money on gas by using water

  4. Call your local news stations or newspaper to help

  5. 1.  You need to be able to prove that your invention actually works.  Contract a team of scientists to test the idea, to document the results properly, and to present the results to their peers working for potential partners.  Although some engineering firms will take the job and write a very carefully worded report if the invention does not work, my firm  will refuse the job at square one because even a carefully worded report can be quoted out of context.  Our reputation is worth more than the business lost.  The major companies all employ PhD scientists and engineers who will test your invention rigorously to ensure that it is both theoretically sound (doesn't violate any laws of physics) and practically sound.  If you bring anything to them that is not sound, they will never consider doing business with you again.

    2.  Use non-disclosure agreements.  If possible, keep some significant details secret.

    3. Time your patent application carefully.  The first two years for a provisional and a PCT will cost 6-10K.  After that the costs rise steeply and if you can't pay you will lose everything.

    4. Deal with small companies first.  You need significant capital behind you before dealing with large companies.  A large company will simple steal the idea, regardless of patent protection and then hire more lawyers than you can afford to stonewall civil court proceedings until you run out of money.  A patent is only as good as your ability to enforce it and enforcement is both uncertain and very expensive ($5 M).  As a small player, you are better off using the criminal justice system than the civil courts to enforce your rights.

  6. First, you need to get beyond the "I believe..." stage by demonstrating the idea works. Chances are that (1) it doesn't, or (2) it works but costs too much, or (3) it has already been tried and has failed.

If you get past all that, most car companies won't discuss anything that is not patented; they are very cautious about where they invest, and tend to have their own research departments.

You'll need a few thousand for the patent application, and approval takes a couple of years or more.

You can search the files of the patent office (USPTO) for free, online. They have a good system for that. You need to see if the idea has already been patented;  you must show novelty, i.e. you have to be first.

    Good luck.

  7. call honda.  ford, gm, and chrysler cannot do anything with it, their unions won't let them

  8. i got a news paper from 1981 where a guy here in montgomery alabama built a hybeird electric car that got 180 miles to a gallon and pushed 80 - 90 mph, he was a friend of the family so my grandparents kept the artical...........i have it in a box here laminated, i tried to send it to a news paper and they ignored me........i heard in the 70's someone came up with an engin that gets 300+ miles to a gallon and the oil companies bought the paton on it and wont market it.

  9. You could spread the word by makeing a website e-mailing people about it and puting up sings and mabye a buildboard if you want to go that far. newspeople talk to them and all of that stuff will get to someone and you will be helped sooner or later to make it!

  10. What is the idea?

  11. Call GM or Ford motors.
