Question:

Inventor or invention from South Carolina?

I have an essay to do for school in which I have to write about an inventor or invention FROM South Carolina.

Surprisingly, there is not a whole lot I can find. Just a guy named Joseph H. Burckhalter (of whom there is annoyingly little real biographical info on). The word count is only 200 so it dosen't have to be huge.

Anybody have any idea?

  1. Ernest Just was born on August 14, 1883 in Charleston, South Carolina.  Ernest Just was the first person to unlock the secrets of cell functions and sturcture. He also studied egg fertilization and human metabolism. His work allowed many of our current technology to be possible.

George Murray was without a doubt, one of the most remarkable citizens of his time. A teacher, farmer, land developer and federal customs inspector, the former slave would go on to become a United States Congressman and a noted inventor. George Murray was born in Sumter County, South Carolina in September, 1853. Murray secured patents for eight inventions, including cultivating and fertilizing equipment and a cotton chopper.

    Not the best but something.

  2. Do you live in South Carolina?

Maybe go to the local library and ask the librarian for information on local inventors...

They seem to know those little things about the town's history

  3. All I found was the same as you did...

Joseph Burckhalter and Robert Seiwald invented the first practical and patented antibody labeling agent. What Burckhalter and Seiwald achieved was a practical and economic method of making synthesized fluorescein isothiocyanate or FITC. An antibody labeling agent, FITC is a dye used for diagnosing infectious disease that is now used widely for numerous infectious diseases, including AIDS, syphilis, leukemia, and lymphoma.
