Inverarity wants to see more of Jon Holland – Cricket News Update
Australia’s national selector, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jon-Holland-c1724 but wants to see the 25-year-old get more game time in order to enhance his reputation as one of the two best spinners in the country, alongside Nathan Lyon.
Holland’s stacks have risen in recent times, following an impressive stint with Australia A during the tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 where the left-arm spinner took 10 wickets at a reasonable average of 27.30. His performances have indeed caught the eye of Inverarity, who views the player among the leading spinners in the region, and one ready to take a place in the national team.
Lyon, who was also on that tour, managed 8 wickets at 48.75 but remains the first-choice for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, and has further represented the side in 13 Tests, taking his overall wickets tally to 42.
However, his recent domestic showings have been mediocre which has put his place under scrutiny. Nonetheless, he is expected to take his place for the first Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, which begins from November 9.
Holland’s performances during the recently commenced Australian domestic season have been hindered owing to Victoria’s depth in the fast bowling department. The likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197 have done major damage in the opening two Sheffield Shield games, leaving the left-armer to bowl only 10 wicketless overs.
Inverarity therefore, is hopeful of watching more of the youngster in days to come.
"I think it's fair to say that we're of the view that the two best spinners we've got just at this moment are http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nathan-Michael-Lyon-c78822 and Jon Holland," Inverarity said in Sydney on Tuesday.
"I saw [Holland] bowl in Adelaide last year in a one-dayer when he got 6 for 29 and he bowled beautifully. There was a variation in spin, a variation in pace and he flighted the ball, he bowled beautifully. We took him on the Australia A tour and he bowled very well. We all go through patches, and Lyon was in a bad patch in England and Holland outbowled him. But Lyon in Adelaide was bowling very differently to the way he bowled in England."
