Investec South Africa Women defeat Catalonia by 1-0: Hockey News
Investec South Africa women team eventually managed to clinch their first victory in the ongoing European tour as they defeated the Catalonia side by 1-0 on June 12. The game was played at the CD Terrassa Sports Club, Spain.
Investec South African women played hard-fought games during their stay in Spain. Their first two games of the tour, which they played against Spanish side, were nail-biters. They were defeated in first of those two by a close margin of two goals to three
and the second match was even more tough in which they remained quite unlucky and lost to Spain by 1-0 in the dying moments of the match.
However, in the third match, Investec South Africa Women fought a tough battle against the strongest regional side in Spain, Catalonia. They were successful in breaking the dead-lock.
The return of seasoned striker, Pietie Coetzee, to the Investec South African side was a great morale-booster for rest of the players and she also made a vital contribution in the victory for her team.
The game was a close contest as the African side played wonderful hockey in the first half, in fact throughout the entire game. The veteran striker, Pietie Coetzee, had the first opportunity to score in the opening moments of the first half, in the third
minute, but she could not find the right spot of the goal-post and the shot went wide of the net.
Soon after, Investec South Africa had another chance in the ninth minute, when Marta Fabregas made a wonderful shot on the goal-post, but once again a near miss. In the later part of the first half, the South Africans as well as their opponents, Catalonia,
delivered some dashing efforts, but the defence-line of both of the sides was so strong that no one could manage to open the account. The teams went off goal-less at the end of the first half.
During the second half, the two teams played a mixture of attacking and defensive hockey and both had their chances, but it was Investec South Africa that scored the solo goal of the match in the 46th minute. After that the efforts continued,
but no more goals were scored and the match concluded at the same score 1-0 to the South Africans.
