  1. A mutual fund is your safest bet, since it diversifies your money amongst a number of stocks.

    If you are real worried about safety, dont put the money in stocks anyway, go for a CD or something like that.  You'll not get as high of a return, but it will be safe.  All stocks carry risk.

  4. If you believe the stock market has lost what it's going to lose then consider investing there.  I believe it is going down more.

    A CD will probably give you better returns in the short run.

  5. A mutual fund makes the most sense, but if you want "stocks", you could by SPY ("Spiders") or DIA  ("Diamonds"), tracking stocks that reflect the S&P500 and the Dow Jones Industrial, respectively.
