Suppose that your long lost aunt Sara has left you an unexpected inheritance of $24,000. You have decided to invest the money rather than spend it on frivolous purchases. Your financial advisor has recommended that you diversify by placing some of the money in stocks and some in bonds. Based upon current market conditions, she has recommended that the amount in bonds should equal three-fifths of the amount invested in stocks. How much should be invested in stocks? How much should be invested in bonds?

  1. Set up an equation. Set the value of x to be the value invested in stocks since the value of stocks is a whole number. The equation would be

    x + 3x/5 = $24,000

    8x/5 = $24,000

    8x = $120,000

    x = $15,000

    Since x is the value invested in stocks, plug it into

    3(x)/5

    3($15,000)/5

    $45,000/5

    $9,000

    Therefore the amount invested in stocks is $15,000 and the amount invested in bonds is $9,000.

  2. x = money in stocks

    24000=3/5 *x + x

    24000=8/5(x)

    24000*5/8=x

    15000=x

    to check it stick mit back into the equation to see if its true

    24000=3/5 (15000) + 15000

    24000=24000 so it is true

    24000-15000=9000 in bonds

  3. let X = amout invested in stock

    then 3/5 * X = 3X / 5 = amount invested in bonds

    X + 3X/5 = 24,000

    5X / 5 + 3X / 5 = 24,000

    8X / 5 = 24,000

    8X = 5 * 24,000 = 120,000

    X = 120,000 / 8 = 15,000 = amount in stocks

    3/5 X = 9,000 = amount in bonds

  4. x = amount invested in stocks

    24000 = x + x * 3/5

    24000 = 8/5 x

    15000 = x

    stocks 15000

    bonds= 24000 - 15000 = 9000

  5. Let the amount invested in stocks = x

    The amount invested in bonds = (3/5)x

    So x + (3/5)x = 24000

    (8/5)x = 24000

    8x = 120,000

    x = 15,000

    So $15000 should be invested in stocks and $9000 should be invested in bonds.
