Involved in accident but no knowledge of it?

I have just received a letter from my insurance company stating " we have recently been informed that a vehicle either owned or driven by you was involved in an accident on the above date"

I know nothing about this, I have not exchanged details with anyone, I have not been contacted by police.

I will call the company tomorrow and ask for details but where do I stand on this???

  1. Barring any witnesses (and subject to local laws), if you vehemently deny involvement, attest to the vehicle not being out of your possession, and there is no visible evidence (dents, paint transfer, etc.) your insurer SHOULD deny the claim.  The claimant's only recourse at that point would be a civil suit, during which your insurer would pay the defense costs.

  2. I don't think the other party has a leg to stand on but in any case, let your insurance company handle the entire matter.  That is what you pay them for.
