Or is there any other form of the verb "to be" in Italian that would be more appropriate for "sono" (I am)? (Like a difference between "ser" and "estar" in Spanish)

  1. Well your avatar makes me think you are female, and so the phrase you are looking for is "Io sono malata"

Yes, the verb "essere" is the correct one to use in this case and not "stare".

You could use "stare" when asked how you are doing you could say "sto male".

Another useful phrase if you are not feeling well is "non mi sento bene", which means, I don't feel well.

I hope you are feeling better.

  2. I'm Italian: we say "sono ammalata" or "sono malata" and we don't say "IO sono amalata", we don't say the subject almost always... if you want to say "I've temperature" in Italian it's "ho la febbre".

  3. Essere is the right verb.  When I lived there I heard "sono malato" a lot.  Not sure if it's the "right" way to say it, but thats what i heard.

  4. i'm from italy... yes it is the right way..

you can say: sono ammalata, sono malata, ho la febbre...

  5. You're close but not quite right. You see you used "essere" yes, it means "to be" however, you need to use the verb "stare" which also means "to be." You use "stare" in greetings and for present conditions. For example, when you are sick, usually you get better. And when you are in a greeting, usually you say how you are presently.

So to answer your question you should say "Sto ammalato." (Stoe-am-al-at-oe) or "Sto male" (Stoe-mal-eh) or "Non sto bene." (Non-stoe-ben-e) All of which mean "I am ill" or "i'm sick."

Just for your info, when someone asks you "Ciao, come stai?" (Hi, how are you?) usually you say one of the three "Ciao, sto bene." (Hi, i'm good) "Sto male" (I'm bad or not good) or "Sto cosi, cosi" (I'm so, so." You use Stare for how you are in a present sense, if you wanted to say something that's usually premanent about yourself, such as height or hair color you use Essere.  For example "Sono alto/alta" "I am tall." (alto for a boy, and alta for a girl)

Hope this is clear and makes sense!

  6. "Sono malato" is right if you are a male, if you ar a female you have to say "Sono malata". You can also say "sto male" (this is used for both female and male)

  7. You can say

    sono malato

    sono ammalato

So you have to use the verb TO BE

If you want to use the verb TO HAVE you say

    ho la febbre

    :-)
