Ioannis Mitakis clinches 2012 Finn European Championship in Gulf of Follonica
After finishing on top of the medal races in the Gulf of Follonica, Greece’s Ioannis Mitakis was able to win the 2012 Finn European Championship. The Finn fleet faced some tricky conditions on the final day of the regatta but they finished the scheduled
medal race to formulate the final scores. Mitakis hit the top podium place with 32 points after seven races, including a discard and a medal race.
The weather conditions in the Gulf of Follonica on the final day were a bit tougher than usual as the winds were blowing on low knots with continuous shifts which made the racing a bit tricky. However, the Finn fleet managed well with timely racing tactics
and completed the medal race.
Ioannis Mitakis grabbed the fleet lead from the start and continued his dominance until the end. Despite the fact that he was not able to hit any bullet in his campaign, he managed to maintain convincing finishes to lead the standings with 32 points. His
only low finish was 35th which was discarded in the end. He finished the medal race in style clinching second podium spot.
Slovenia’s Vasilij Zbogar finished on the second podium with 43 points after sailing in seven races. The Slovenian sailor failed to retain a consistent course despite compiling two bullets during his run and slipped down on Number 2 position. Croatia’s Ivan
Kljakovic Gaspic won the bronze medal with 48 points adding one bullet in his score line.
