MnO4- + SO2 + H+ = SO42- + Mn2+ + H2O

Sorry i cant do the superscript and subscript. Need help with this. The questions asks me to break it into oxidation and reduction. And balance it also. It says it is in acid media

  1. MnO4-   & 8  H+   & 5 electrons   -->    Mn2+ & 4 H2O

    a reduction of Mn+7 in MnO4-  into Mn+2, a change in oxidation # of 5)

    SO2  & 2 H2O -->  (SO4)-2  & 4H+  & 2 electrons

    (an oxidation of S+4 in SO2 into S+6 in (SO4)-2 , a change in oxidation # of 2)

    to balance the electrons taken & loss:

    2 MnO4-   &  16 H+   & 10 electrons   -->   2 Mn2+ & 8 H2O

    5 SO2 & 10 H2O  -->  5 (SO4)-2  & 20 H+ & 10 electrons

    giving:

    2 (MnO4)- & 5 SO2 & 2 H20 = 5 (SO4)2- & 2 Mn2+ & 4 H+

    balance oxygens, yes  20/20

    balance hydrogens, yes 4/4

    charges balance, yes -2/ -2

    that's your answer
