Iowa’s Hampton out for rest of season

The Iowa Hawkeyes will be without their starting running back Jewel Hampton for the remainder of the season, after the sophomore suffered a torn ACL in Saturday’s game against Arizona.

Hampton has had trouble staying healthy throughout his career at Iowa. The youngster looked promising in his first season, registering a school record eight touchdowns as a freshman. However, the following season he suffered a torn ACL and missed the entire
year. This season the running back was suspended for the club’s first game, but participated in their second match-up against Iowa State. However, he only lasted into the second half of the game against Arizona before sustaining the injury.

The Hawkeyes have been struggling with injuries at the running back position all year. Back-up running back p**i O’Meara has also been ruled out for Saturday’s game with a concussion. The injury to O’Meara leaves sophomore Adam Robinson to shoulder the load
in week four. The only other option available to Iowa’s head coach Kirk Ferentz is true freshman Marcus Coker.

To complicated things Iowa also lost linebacker Bruce Davis for the year with a torn ACL. Davis is a back-up linebacker and has five tackles on the season.

Before going out to injury Hampton accumulated 114 yards on 27 carries with one touchdown.

Iowa suffered their first loss of the young season to Arizona last week, after winning their first two games against Eastern Illinois and Iowa State.  The Hawkeyes will hope to have their running back issues worked out after this weeks game against 1-2 Ball
State, as the team is set to head into the most difficult part of their schedule.  Iowa faces a very difficult October with games against #23 Penn State, #21 Michigan, #11 Wisconsin, and #25 Michigan State.
