Iphone 3g - Buy in NY and Take back to uk?

Question

My friend is going to New York this weekend and said she'd get me some stuff if i pay her back, due to the good exchange rate at the moment. I love the look of the iphone 3g and want to get one - so..

Is there a way she can get me an iphone in america and take it back here to the UK , where i can use it on pay as you go, whichever network i dont care. I dont want to be tied down on a contract. Also will there be any issues with itunes etc due to it being an american model or being unlocked?

well my cousin went to america and he was going to get it, but he never because there's a sim already installed in the phone, and you can't get it unlocked

You can't now, its really bad. Firstly, you have to make a contract with AT&T at the shop, and also, you have to prove that you live in America. They've realised that people are just buying loads form America and unlocking them without connecting to AT&T. But, buy one form France, it's much better! Or wait till O2 get out the pay as you go Iphone version, in December!

no it wont work here. even if its unlocked . the itunes is a different set up in US
