Iphone Help: Will a Jailbroken Iphone fully work?

Question

I am debating on buying the new Iphone from either Ebay as a Jailbroken Iphone, or just extending my contract through AT&T and paying the $199 as an upgerade. If I buy the Unlocked, Jailbroken Iphone will it still function exactly the same as the normal Iphone? That is will I need to still buy a contract in order to use all the features of the phone? I previously purchased a Blackberry Pearl unlocked and did not purchase the blackberry contract. Without that contract I could not use any of the features of the blackberry. Is that the same with the Iphone? Will I still be able to use all the apps? Use the Wifi and search the internet? Still be able to do everything using the Simcard and contract I have right now with out upgrading saving me nearly $70 each month?

You would still need the additional iPhone data plan and there are no guarantees that everything will work with devices that have been hacked or unlocked and if there are firmware updates released and you update that device in iTunes it will no longer be jailbroken and you will have to start all over again/  Also there is no warranty on those devices so if something goes wrong with them Apple will not replace it
