Iphone and bosspref?

I have the 2g iphone (bought in January). I installed Bosspref and turned off edge. I tried to use the web (get error cannot connect to service), and tried to use the weather update and get update failed. But I still see the "E" symbol next to the ATT log. Is this normal?
