  1. The memory on the label is gigabytes defined in numbers of base 10:

    10^9 bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes = 1 Gigabyte

However, computers are binary and define the gigabyte in numbers of base 2:

    2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes = 1 Gigabyte

therefore, since the computer's definition of a gigabyte is more than the actual definition of a gigabyte, it appears that there are less.  However, i assure you that your device has all the memory capacity it was advertised to have

also there is some software pre-loaded on the ipod that lets you navigate the menus and such...

  2. I don't know why that is but recently i got a 3rd gen i pod nano and its meant to be 8 gig but its only got 7.85 gig and that was before i installed anything on to it. Before i had that one i had a original i pod nano 1st gen which was only 2 gigs but only had 1.64 gig memory without anything installed on to it. I would guess that it because some of the gigs get taken up my the stuff that is already installed on the i pod when you get it ..

    If that makes any sense.

  3. okay the 6 gigs or whatever are your calendar, games, notebook, stopwatch and all the othe c**p that it comes with
