Ipod jailbreaking question..?

why do i need to restore my ipod touch before jailbreaking it?

what it i had lots of space left already?

is it completely neccessary?

i have only about 100 songs and it is a 16GB so there is plenty of GB's left.. do i HAVE to restore it first? (its 1.1.5 if that helps?)
