Ipswich Town chief says Roy Keane is under no 'further pressure'
Ipswich Town chief executive Simon Clegg says that the club's manager Roy Keane has not been put under any additional pressure after suffering two defeats in a row in the Football League Championship.
Town were beaten by both Derby County (on Tuesday 9 November) and Barnsley (on saturday 13 November) at home to leave the side 12th in the Championship, but Clegg says that, with the teams in the division so close to each other, there was no cause for panic.
Clegg added that Town's strong run in the Football League Cup was a big boost for the club and that the board was fully behind Keane.
He told the BBC that: "The manager is not under any further pressure from me or the owner at this moment in time. We are committed to Roy, Roy is leading this football club, he is taking us to where we want to get to. We're three points away from being fourth
place in the Championship. And we're the only non-Premier League side through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup. If you had offered us that back in August people would have bitten your hand off.”
The 3-1 defeat to Barnsley attracted the ire of a vocal section of the club's fans, who began to boo their own side. However, Clegg defended the supporters, claiming that they had the right to express displeasure at the players since they were the ones paying
money to watch.
Clegg added that: "We should never forget the fact that the fans are our customers, they're the people that week-in week-out are paying out of their own pockets to allow us to operate in the way we do. I know that the players were disappointed with the reaction
of the fans but they equally recognise they've only got themselves to blame for that."
