Iraklis THESSALONIKI defeats CSKA SOFIA in a CEV Volleyball Champions League
CSKA SOFIA of Bulgaria and Iraklis THESSALONIKI of Greece recently competed with each other in a 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men match. The city that played host to the competition was Thessaloniki in Greece.
The match between the two sides went on for four exciting sets at the end of which the team that was able to emerge as victors was the home team of Iraklis. By the time that the home team started celebrating their win, the scoreboard read as 25-21, 25-19,
16-25 and 25-21.
The coach of the winning team, Sotirios Drikos, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match had come to its close, “We claimed a very important game and we now have the last match with Noliko MAASEIK
next week. Our target was to remain in contention for a ticket to the Playoffs 12 until the very end and I want to congratulate my players for achieving this goal.”
On the other hand, Aleksander Popov, who is the coach of the CSKA squad, shared his views by making the following comments, “We tried to deliver a good performance and we succeeded in doing this for some sections of the game. I hope we’ll claim at least
one win next week while hosting Arkas IZMIR in Sofia.”
The opening set saw CSKA take the lead at 5-2 but Iraklis managed to get it and stick with it for 11-9 and end the frame on their terms at 25-21. The second set too saw Iraklis take dominance at the courts which followed the same pattern as the first set
and ended in a win for Iraklis. CSKA managed to come out strong in the third set and grab a 25-16 victory but the fourth set slid the way of Iraklis.
Despite the fact that they won the match, the entrance of Iraklis into the Playoffs 12 of the championship is still not certain.
The home team would have to score another win next week in order to earn a ticket into the next round of the tournament. The match next in line for Iraklis is scheduled to be played next week in Belgium with the Noliko MAASEIK squad.
