  1. Algiers Accords

  2. To try and it that they were instrumental in defeating Carter.

  3. They released them just before Reagan was sworn into office and they arrived home the next day. The Iranians released them at that time because they knew that Reagan would come and get them if they weren't sent home.

Bottom Line: They would have rotted in Iran forever as long as we had a weak Democratic President like Carter in power and, in the case of Reagan himself, they would have been ripped from the hands of the Iranians as soon as a Republican administration was in power.

The Iranians, being reasonably intelligent people, already understood all of this and said to themselves "Well, the jig is up - the Americans have finally elected a man with a backbone and were gonna have to send the hostages back." And so they did.

And now all we have to do is to help them to remember the size and significance of the mistake they made almost thirty years ago. Then we can get back to being buds.

  4. to jack with Carter

  5. Tom is right, the mechanism by which they were released was the Algiers Accord, which was negotiated by the Carter-headed government.  Here is more information about it:

The timing did, though, have to do with dissing President Carter.
