Iran defeats Argentina by 3-2 in second round of 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup - Volleyball
Iran and Argentina went head to head today, Novemebr 25, on the second day of the second round of the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup. The tournament fixture saw Iran and Argentina took place in Osaka at the Osaka Central Gym. The Iranian squad had a close call
bu beat the South Americans by 3-2
The match between the two teams went on for five long and gruelling sets which kept the spectators glued to their seats. The first set of the match saw the Argentineans take the lead from early on and once they had the advantage, they did not let go of it
while the Iranians kept trailing behind all the way till the end of the opening set. The loss of the first set caused the Iranians to step up their game in the second set which made the frame stay close all through with the Iranians equalising the match in
the end.
The third set shifted the momentum to the Argentineans again but the Iranians were able to win themselves the fourth set and take the match to a fifth one which Iran bagged and sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 15-25, 25-21,
24-26, 25-16 and 15-12.
The coach of the Iranian team, Julio Velasco, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after the match had reached its close: "We are very happy with this victory. Argentina is a strong team but a young one. We served very well today.
Our system of blocking and defense worked well. (Mehdi) Mahdavi is a setter who blocks very well.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Argentinean squad, Javier Weber, shared his views in the following way: "In all sets we had a very difficult game. It was tight. Our problem was in attacking. Then our blocking and defense didn't work. It was the combinaton
of those that led to the result today".
