Iran defeats Venezuela by 3-0 in a FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualifying Tournament match
The Iranian squad met with their Venezuelan counter parts on the fifth day of the FIVB Men's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament taking place in Tokyo on June 7, Thursday.
The venue of the match was the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym.
The Iranians were able to put up a good show and hand out a defeat to the Venezuelans by making a clean sweep over them. Iran managed to bag the first two sets by a significant margin and when Venezuela showed some signs of life in the third frame, the Iranians
were able to come down hard and secure the match at the following final set scores, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-20.
The coach of the Iranian team, Julio Velasco, shared his views by making the following comments, “We played better today than we did against Puerto Rico. Our attack and serves were good. We will play Serbia next and will have to play better to beat the European
champions. But you never know, we may have a chance to win.”
On the contrary, Roberto Garcia the Venezuelan coach, expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the match in the following statements, “Our team did not receive or serve well. We could recover in the third set. We were too weak. There was a big difference
in quality and performance between the teams. We lost our focus and lacked team play.”
Even though Venezuela lost the match, Kervin Pinerua was able to score the most points by putting up a figure of 12. On the other hand, the highest scorers from the Iranian side were Amir Ghafour and Farhad Ghaemi, each with 11 points to their credit.
Iran sped to a 5-1 lead in the first set and was able to stretch it till the second technical time out at 16-11. The Venezuelans tried to close in the gap but Iran raced ahead to bag the frame at 25-16. The second set followed a similar course as the first
one with the Iranians quickly grabbing the frame at 25-16 again. The third set saw a bit of a struggle go on in the initial phases with the score close at 17-14 with Iran in the lead. However, Venezuela fell behind and lost to their rivals at 25-20.
The victory has been able to increase the tally of the Iranian wins in the tournament so far to 4 at the cost of one loss while the Venezuelans have earned just one win.
