Dr. Davarzani explained the on-going preparations to the visitors. Team players and the technical staff also got a chance to speak to the sports minister and they exchanged their views about the upcoming event.
The Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship is a biennial event, where teams from Asian countries contest their skills. This year, the 16th edition of the championship will be conducted, while the Iranian capital, Tehran, will host the tournament.
A total of sixteen teams have registered their names for the competition. Teams will be playing under the classification of following groups:
Pool A – Chinese Taipei, Iran, India, and Afghanistan Pool B – Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan Pool C – Pakistan, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Thailand Pool D – Turkmenistan, South Korea, Australia, and Qatar
Azadi Volleyball Hall and Azadi Stadium, the two indoor venues in Tehran have been finalized to set up the field of play for matches. Tournament will be opened with the first preliminary round-robin, which will complete its length over three days. The opening
round will be followed by a one-day break. In the next run, the classification round will get the green light. The quarter and semi finals will take place on September 27. The final ranking for the 16th AVC Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship will
be publicised after final matches on 28th and 29th of September.
Japan is the top team from previous edition of the championship, which was held in Manila, Philippines in 2009. Japan faced off against Iran in the final encounter, while South Korea seized third place and settled for the bronze medal. Overall, the Japanese
squad is ahead of everyone in the medals’ race in the history of this event. They have a total of 13 medals (7 Gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze) in their custody.
South Korea has captured 14 medals in previous championships but it has less number of gold-medals than Japan. The host country Iran is still without any gold-medal. This is a great chance for them to prove their endeavours and get a hold of the top honour
this year. The familiar conditions, home courts and emotional support of fans will surely be a great advantage for them. Hard work would be the key of success for the Iranian team and any other team in the tournament.
Iranian squad is enjoying a great form and recent visit of sport minister has further enhanced their morale.
