Iran sweeps Egypt in a 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup match - Volleyball news
The second day of the third round of the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup tournament saw the Iranians competing with the Egyptians in Fukuoka, Japan at the Marine Messe. The Iranians secured an impressive win by making a clean sweep over the Egyptians.
The first set of the match saw both teams start off on level ground but as the frame reached its final stages, the Iranians were able to pull up ahead and get hold of the opening frame. The loss of the first set got the Egyptians to step up their game in
the second set which resulted in a competitive display of volleyball from both the sides. However, the Iranians were able to propel themselves forwards in the end of the second set and take a 2-0 advantage in the match. The loss of the first two sets of the
game did not sit too well with the Egyptians and their performance experienced a slack in the third frame which was dominated by the Iranians from the beginning. Iran took the lead early on and stuck with the advantage till the end. As a result, the final
set scores stood at the following final set scores in favour of the Iranians: 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15.
The coach of the Iranian team, Julio Velasco, expressed himself in the following manner after his team had won the match: "We are very happy for this victory after our 3-0 loss to the United States yesterday. This was important for us. We played with very
few mistakes today. Our serving, blocking and defense worked very well. I have been to Japan seven times for competitions and they are always very well organized.”
On the other hand, the coach of the losing team, Sherif El-Shemerly, shared his feelings by making the following comments: "Today we continued playing very bad. No. 4 (Ahmed Abdelhay) had a small injury to his leg. We continue playing matches every day and
the load of travel started to affect the players. We hope to play better in the next matches.”
