Iran sweeps Russia to enter the 9-12 classifications of FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship
The city of Argentina, Almirante Brown, played host to a FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship fixture on August 26th, as Iran and Russia played in the second round of the tournament. The Iranians ended up securing themselves a position in the 9-12
classification matches of the championship by making a clean sweep over the Russians.
The first set of the match was completely dominated by the Iranians as the Russians did not provide any challenge to their opponents. A smothering loss in the first set sent a much needed wake up call to the Russians in the second set and they were able
to battle hard. However, the Iranians proved to be the better side. The third set started with both teams locked together in a tight struggle but that did not last long and Iran was able to pull away from the Russians to win the match at the following final
set scores: 25-12, 26-24 and 25-20.
The coach of the Iranian team, Behrouz Ataei Nouri, expressed his joy in the following manner at the press conference after the match had reached its close: "We played very well, even though the Russians are very young. We know their tactics."
On the other hand, the Russian coach, Vladimir Kondra, shared his disappointment by giving the following statement: "I can’t believe how bad we played today. We never had such big amount of mistakes in this season."
The Iranians were leading by 8-5 in the first technical time out of the opening set and were able to extend the advantage at 16-11. After this point, the Russians seemed to have lost their sense of struggle that made it easier for the Iranians to sail smoothly
towards a first set win at 25-12.
The Iranians did not let up the heat in the second set and got the lead early on at 8-3. However, the Russians managed to close in the gap to 16-14 by the time the second technical time out came. The contest remained close all the way to the end but the
Iranians prevailed in bagging another win at 26-24.
The third set was tight and by the time of the first technical time out Iran moved up ahead at 16-13. Russia was slowly left behind as Iran sped on towards a final win at 25-20.
Three players in the match were able to post the highest number of points. Two of these were from the Iranian side, namely Pourya Fayazi and Javad Hosseinabadi, while the Russian player was Vladimir Manerov. Each one of the players tallied 18 points each
on the score board during the entire match.
