Ireland Immigration Project?

Question

I am doing a poster on immigration. I am coming from Westport, Ireland, and I am going to Ellis Island, United States.

This takes place in 1856.

I need to get a few things for the poster.

1. Something that will be useful in America. I was thinking some money, but I couldn't find any photos of paper money from 1856 from Ireland.

2. Clothes

there is a web site i think its called ellisislandrecords if not play about using the name Eilis island and you will get all record of Irish people that when to Ellis island you put in the surname also look up cobh and make a print out of the photo of i think here name is Mary Moore the first person to enter the USA from ells island and the story of it

1. The money used then was UK sterling. The only notes in circulation were £1 notes and 30 schilling notes, nothing higher other than that is was all coins (certainly not gold ones though). I googled it but i couldnt find any pictures that were of old money but i remember in school learning that the fare to new york was about £20 pounds for one family.

first of all and most importantly ... it's EMigration you're talking about ... about people leaving Ireland ... IMMigration is coming into the country (so they would have been emigrating from Ireland, but immigrating into USA)

people in 1856 were escaping poverty and hard work, and heading to a promised land full of hope and money ... one of the most useful things they might have taken with them were the tools of their trade ... yes they would have taken what money they could but they didn't have very much and it would more likely have been in the form of coins made out of precious metal (gold, silver)... what your poster really needs to concentrate on is the promise offered by the USA
