1845 Just before the start of the famine- about 8 million

1850 4 million

1980 4 million

The numbers are approximate. 1 million died of hunger between 1847 -50, and 3 million emigrated. Emigration continued un abated until very recently. Ireland may be the only country in the world with a population lower today than 175 years ago.
