Ireland Under-19s v Sri Lanka Under-19s – ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012 – (9th place play-off semi final) – Match Update
An unbeaten century by Sandun Weerakkody, followed by Lahiru Madushanka’s 6-wicket haul, provided the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Allan-Robert-Border-c43726 Field in Brisbane on August 22.
The Sri Lanka U-19s won the toss and elected to bat first – however the opening stand between Sebastian Perera (13) and Shehan Fernando (5) was not able to progress beyond 5 runs. Perera was dismissed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Barry-McCarthy-c47383 in the 10th over, by which point the Sri Lanka U-19s were at 44 for 2. However, the top order did not disappoint – Angelo Jayasinghe (55) chipped in with a vital half-century, while Weerakkody remained invincible, sticking it out at the crease till the end, in addition to scoring an unbeaten 112.
Weerakkody’s 87-run stand with Jayasinghe was followed by a 42-run partnership with Madushanka (14), but following the latter’s dismissal at the hands of Irish skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Dockrell-c59135 (10-1-39-3), Weerakkody was unable to find an effective partner from the remainder of the batting order.
Dockrell made a sizeable dent in the lower order, dismissing both Tharindu Kaushal (3) and skipper Sanitha de Mel (0), and although they were all out by the 50th over, the Sri Lanka U-19s had managed to post a substantial total of 258.
However, the chase proved too much for the Ireland U-19s, with Player of the Match Madushanka (7.5-0-24-6) on the prowl, and the Irish batting order unable to apply themselves at the crease.
The top order, comprising wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shane-Charles-Getkate-c89657 (46), and Tyrone Kane (18) dismissed by Madushanka before they could progress further.
The lower order crumbled at the hands of Madushanka as well, and by the 38th over the Ireland U-19s had been cut off, all out, at 149 – 109 runs short of their target.
