Ireland Under-19s v Sri Lanka Under-19s – ICC Under-19 World Cup (Warm-Up Match) – Match Update
Tharindu Kaushal’s 6-wicket haul proved to the Sri Lanka Under-19s’ saving grace following a shoddy batting performance, and they succeeded in securing a 50-run victory over the Ireland Under-19s in their http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Under-19 World Cup warm-up match, played at the
Albury Oval in Brisbane today on August 8.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lanka opened their innings with Pabasara Waduge (29) and Sebastian Perera (19). The opening partnership yielded 35 runs, and even after the latter was dismissed by Peter Chase in the 6th over, number
3 batsman Shehan Fernando (27) did not allow the momentum to lag.
His partnership with Waduge got the team up to 81, after which the opener was dismissed by Tyrone Kane (7-0-29-2) in the 14th over. His successor Angelo Jayasinghe was unable to make any major contributions, run out on 1, and the remainder of
the top and middle order put forth similar lacklustre performances.
Lahiru Madushanka, however, managed to remain not out on 27, and skipper Sanitha de Mel (23) also managed to reach double figures. Despite this, with Andy McBrine (8-0-28-2) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 finished,
all out, at 188 by the 46th over.
However, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 U-19s were incapable of chasing the target, and with Kaushal (8.3-1-20-6) on the prowl, they found themselves cut off at 138 – 50 runs short of the target.
With the exception of Ryan Hunter (55), Jason van der Merwe (28), and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Barry-McCarthy-c47383 (19*), the Irish batsmen were unable to register double-digit individual scores.
De Mel sent opener Scott http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 der Merwe and McBrine (0) back to the pavilion in the 16th
over, and following that up the dismissals of with Kane (5), http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shane-Charles-Getkate-c89657 (4), and Dockrell (3).
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-J-McCarter-c60498 and Alistair Shields were both bowled on 2 by Pulina Tharanga and Amila Aponso respectively, and Kaushal stepped in to finish the job, sending Adam Coughlan packing, lbw, to restrict the Irish to 138, all out, by the 40th over,
granting his side a 50-run win.
