  1. I was doing this in History not so long ago!! It was only the wealthy who gotta go there and the wealthys family. the others were left behind and either died or just struggled 2 stay alive and succeeded!! Hope I helped!! Please pick me as best answer!!

  2. They travelled on 'Coffin Ships' very cheaply. The price of food (as most was being exported to England) was dearer than the cost of travel.

  3. it was cheaper then. the ones that didnt emigrate died well alot . the lucky few who had a bit of money emmigrated and anyway the famine ships were brutal squalid packed and alot died on the journey.

  4. They sold everything they had, leaving only the clothes on their back. They were also subsidised by the British govt.

  5. I honestly don't know, they probably beg, stole and borrowed to get the cheapest fare possible on ships going to Canada and the USA.

  6. Some families all chipped in for one of them to.

Some of the richer farmers in their area sponsored the poor people them and some people were smuggled on the boat and didn't pay at all

  7. Quoting what budding author said, "The British government actually paid for ziltch, compared to the land and property they robbed from the Irish people!"

And then he goes on to say the USA is a great place??

The USA was robbed from the Indians, they were also purposely starved by the European settlers (many of whom were Irish) by shooting all the buffalo. Unlike the British, the USA has never given this land back.

Hey, and don't blame Irish hardship solely with the English. The Scots, Welsh and loyal Irish all played their part.

  8. my guess would be stealing

getting away from the famine and the place is always a good option

  9. irish girls are the best girls in the world ;)

  10. A quarter of the population is just an estimation, in truth no-one knows how many got on the boats, as so many were so sick by the time they got on the boats that they didn't survive the journey.

They had the fare because those of their families were already in those countries and could send them the fare, in most cases.

  11. It was called assisted emigration. The government paid for it.

Budding author you might not be Irish but I am Irish and I also have a degree in Irish history. I advise you do some research before discussing a similar topic in the future because it just makes you look like an idiot.

  12. The British government actually paid for ziltch, compared to the land and property they robbed from the Irish people!

When I say 'British'  it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth, 'English' is better to say.

Lots of Irish made it off their own backs to reach Liverpool, not very far away, some of those lived long enough and got enough money together to travel on to USA.

These folk were mainly accepted and helped in Liverpool , and the USA.

Almost 1.5 million Irish folk died of starvation during that period, while they were dying food was being shipped out of Ireland to England!

Shipped out by the English land owners, they also evicted their Irish tenants at the same time.

I am not Irish, but I know and understand the English, the history is not a pretty story at all.

And they have the nerve to decry genocide?

Liverpool people to my mind have always been great folk, USA  in general is a great place. ( I am also not American).

                                                  Yes it's all history!

The major part of Ireland  is now back with the Irish, and they are doing very well, one little corner yet to be 'freed' , this will be done shortly!  Scotland is well on the way to be freed, Wales will eventually follow.

Leaving what? The United Kingdom of England? And all it's 'subjects' no citizens, subjects!!!!

    Hope this  helps?????

  13. Borrowing,stole,begged,stowaways.

    I love irish people.Seriously.Oh my gosh<3

  14. Ah all the slightly better off left Ireland, even tho they were still pretty broke, and the rest of the poor b******s just had to deal with starving.

  15. They travelled on death ships, fares were low at that time, sure they were sick but its amazing what a person will do if it means a new life not only for themselves but for their children also, having said that if the british government had of exported back the irish meat it received at the time maybe more irish would have lived, but there you go i guess theres no such thing as "good neighbours" xx

  16. Well, it was cheaper then, cuz they had the big coffin ships. Entire families would work to get the fare to send one person over. When that person got to America / Canada, they worked, and sent money back to Ireland to bring the rest of the family over.

  17. There are many really good websites covering this tragedy.  Some of these below.

  18. familes got what little money they had put it together and paid for their tickets... those that emmigrated sent money home to help pay for others to survive or leave
