Ireland defeat Scotland by 2-1 in the last minute of the match
Ireland men’s hockey team scored a last minute thrilling victory over Scotland men’s hockey team by defeating them by 2-1 in the opening match of the Celtic Cup, which is being played in Cardiff, Wales.
The match proved a tough battle between both of the teams and it was just near to a draw, but the last thirty seconds were quite phenomenal and sensational for the Irish team as they scored the deciding goal of the match, just nine seconds before the
close of the play. Although the conditions were not suitable for the play, yet both of the teams showed their determination and dedication for the victory throughout the entire match. However, the luck was with the Irish team who astonishingly grabbed the
victory in the dying moments of the match.
“This was a good game; played in difficult conditions we are pleased with our resilience playing the game to the final whistle, 30 seconds is a long time in hockey, as we showed today,” Peter Jackson, the manager of the Irish hockey team, gave his
comments after a stunning victory.
The match started with both teams creating a number of opportunities in the first half, but could not manage to break the scoring dead-lock. Fergus Dunn had created two very good opportunities for the Scottish team, but remained unsuccessful in finding
the net. Along with an open field play, the two sides also had penalty-corners, but these remained on only corners and could not be converted into goals. The first half finished at 0-0.
In the second half there were more goal scoring chances for both of the teams but it was Scotland who first opened their account by scoring a wonderful field goal in the 49th minute, the scorer was Kenny Bain. However, the Irish
side replied in the 63rd minute when Andy McConnell gave a final touch to the beautiful move created by a good build up play. In the 70th minute Andy McConnell did it again for the Irish men, just nine seconds
before the end of the play. The match concluded at the same score 2-1 to Ireland.
This was a very disappointing result, again we lost the lead by not taking our chances to increase it and not defending well enough to preserve it,” Eugene Connell, the Scottish team manager explained after their defeat.
On the other hand the Scottish team officials looked very disappointed at their defeat against Ireland.
