Ireland Flanker Denis Leamy criticises referees for New Zealand favouritism
Ireland flanker Denis Leamy feels that New Zealand receives preferential treatment from referee’s because they are the world’s best side.
Ireland were defeated 38-18 by the All Blacks on Saturday 20 November and a number of players have criticised South African referee Marius Jonker for his performance in the game.
Flanker Stephen Ferris was disappointed with the referee for not penalising Richie McCaw after the forward arguably fouled consistently throughout the Test while Leamy felt that the referee was biased
and failed to allow Ireland away with similar offences.
The Irish forward believes that Argentina are likely to be penalised if they slow the ball down like New Zealand did, in the Test on Sunday 28 November.
Speaking at a press conference, Leamy said, "I imagine if they infringe as much as the Kiwis did, possibly we'll see a yellow (card). It's frustrating when you're tackled and there's a guy possibly lying
there, or there's a hand holding the ball and you can't get it placed quickly enough."
Leamy admitted that all teams attempt to gain advantages, but the Munster flanker feels that no other team would get away with the same number of infringements as New Zealand.
“Obviously everyone tries to do that, but when a ref spots something you're hoping he deals with it,” he said.
Leamy stated that New Zealand were clinical in their performance, but the forward felt that the All Blacks should have been reduced to 14 men after their persistent infringing. "Possibly there were times
against New Zealand when there were cases for cards. New Zealand are very professional at slowing down the ball and stuff like that,” said the Irish flanker.
However, the forward felt that the referee was to blame and he said, “You really need your referees to be strong and consistent, but sometimes it's maybe one law for the rich and a different one for the
poor."
