  1. the land mass that is the island of ireland has a split personality since it is divided into two entities.  they are the (free) republic of ireland and the province of northern ireland, also called ulster (which are part of the UK, along with england, wales, the isle of man, scotland and the channel islands).   although still, officially, a part of the UK, scotland has had its own parliament and is semi-autonomous.(since 1998 after the movie, Braveheart, invoked and revived scottish pride).

this split occurred when Britain (which had cruelly conquered the land mass under cromwell) finally gave independence to the sinn fein government in 1921 after violent riots against british rule in the bloody easter uprising of 1915.

sadly, 6 counties (ulster) choose to remain in the UK and has been the source of much violence between the minority IRA (catholic) and British troops sent to protect the majority protestants.

the republic of ireland is primarily catholic and has its capital at dublin; whereas, northern ireland (also, called ulster) is primarily protestant and has its provincial capital at belfast (although the british flag is what flies over its government buildings and london is its official capital).

the irish flag is representative of this split with green (catholic) and orange(protestant) separated by the white (representing peace).  hope this helps.

  2. Only northern Ireland is still part of the UK, as for the rest of it it's considered to be just Ireland

  3. northern ireland is ... southern ireland (Eire) isn't

  4. Northern Ireland is... The REPUBLIC is certainly not. Some people from the north consider themselves to be English but the majority of the people I know from there consider themselves to be Irish. Northern Ireland have some of the greatest gaelic football teams in the country. The players on these teams consider themselves Irish.

  5. All of Ireland is part of "The British Isles (as barbados in one of the Carribean isles) (GEOGRAPHICALLY)

Northern Ireland (I;E Counties Derry Antrim Down Fermanagh Armagh and Tyrone) England ,Scotland, and Wales are "The United Kingdome" (POLITICALLY)

England, Scotland, and Wales are "Great Britain"GEOGRAPHLICALLY

  6. hold on a minute,  bigreddwg has his facts all mixed up and obviously has  an english bias when giving his only one side of the equation...

after 800 years of oppression, which included the english occupation and landownership, forcing penniless Irish farmers to rent their own land from English rulers.. and also the usual tactics employed by the English in their colonies around the world, the Irish had enough...

In 1916 ( not 1915) at easter time, the streets of Dublin were the scene of an uprising by Irish citizens, which resulted in many killed on both sides . then came 5 more years of guerilla warfare by Irishmen and women and eventually an anglo-irish agreement was reached, England was unwilling to give up the 6 counties of ulster which divided the country since then...

there are many different groups with many different goals and opinions,  whether Republican, nationalist, unionist, loyalist, or whoever, Peace has  become the norm for most people in Northern Ireland and that's the way they want to keep it. a new generation has grown up in a peaceful era and hopefully it continues.... both sides have committed atrrocities in the past in the name of peace, and this seemed to be the blueprint for palestine/israel

if you want more information  go to wikipedia, but make sure you get both sides of the story.. hope this helped , even a little

  7. and your from.....................

  8. Seriously?????!!!

  9. Wrong. Ireland is a country in itself. Six of our counties are still under English rule but the rest is the Republic of Ireland. Totally seperate from the UK and i wouldn't advise you to come to Ireland and make idiotic statements like that cause you mightn't like the reaction you get.

  10. Northern Ireland is still part of the UK.  Southern Ireland is known as the republic of Ireland and is seperate from  UK.

  11. Wow you're not serious! Are you? Only Northern Ireland is part of the UK....The Republic of Ireland is independent!!!
