Ireland selects 18 players for Celtic Cup and UCD Four Nations Tournament
The Ireland Men’s hockey team has announced for the two upcoming tournaments, the Celtic Cup which is going to be played in Wales from June 17 to June 19, and the Four Nations tournament which will be played at national Stadium, University College Dublin,
in Dublin, Ireland from June 20 to June 25.
In the Celtic Cup, the Irish men will be up against Scotland, France and Wales while in the Four Nations Tournament; Pakistan, China and France will be among the contenders along with the hosts, the Irish side.
Paul Revington, the coach of the Irish men’s national hockey team, has announced the squad by keeping in view the recent performance of the players in the triple header series against Wales.
Paul Revington, the Irish coach, explained his views on the selection of the players for the upcoming tournaments. He said, “The Ireland squad has worked really hard during the recent training period in Dublin and set themselves a good foundation for continued
growth in the months ahead."
He further added, "Both events take place very close to one another and while school and university exams have also dictated how we select through this period, this challenge allows the squad another opportunity to test our strength in depth and also expose
several younger players to a higher level of international competition."
He also stated that his squad is very excited regarding the tournaments ahead because the athletes are going to compete with the international players having class of calibre.
The Ireland squad for the Celtic Cup comprises of David Ames, Peter Blakeney, Jonny Bruton, Chris Cargo, Kenny Carroll, David Carson, Peter Caruth, David Fitzgerald, Ronan Flannery, Paul Gleghorne, Kyle Good, John Jackson, Jason Lynch, Michael Maguire, Andy
McConnell, Richard Sykes, Gareth Watkins and Stephen West.
Paul Revington will be the coach, while Peter Jackson will be the manager along with David Richards (Physiotherapist) and Jonny Caren (S&C/video).
The Irish men’s squad for Four Nations tournament consists of David Ames, Joe Brennan, Tim Cockram, Mitch Darling, Ronan Gormley, Conor Harte, David Harte, John Jermyn, Tim Lewis, Stuart Loughrey, Eugene Magee, Phelie Maguire, Geoff McCabe, Bruce McCandless,
Shane O’Donoghue, Ian Sloan, Lain Walker and Michael Watt.
The team will be coached by Paul Revington and managed by Peter Jackson along with Arul Anthoni (Assistant Coach as well as Assistant Manager). The other personnel include Stephen Barry (S&C and Video), David Richards (Physiotherapist) and Tristan Seaton-Stedham
(Video).
It will be interesting to see how the two-split strategy of having two different teams, representing Ireland, perform in the upcoming two tournaments and meet the expectations of their Head Coach, Paul Revington.
