Ireland v Uganda - ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier – Match Update
Ireland 179/5 (20/20 ov) v Uganda 97 (19.5/20 ov) - Ireland won by 82 runs
Ireland finally exhibited their superiority in the 46th match of the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 Qualifier on Monday, March 19, 2012, when they beat Uganda by 82 runs, at ICC Global Cricket Academy Ground No 2, Dubai.
After winning the toss, Uganda invited Ireland to bat first, but had no idea what was about to be unleashed as they had made a big mistake to let Ireland batsmen have a first go on the wicket.
Irish openers, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling gave their side a formidable opening stand as the batsmen hammered the opposition all around the park, without remorse.
The batsmen looked in impeccable form and had a massive target on their minds to give Uganda a run for their money.
The openers raced to their teams half century and finally with 78 runs on the board, the partnership came to an end in the 8th over when Stirling was dismissed by Davis Arinaitwe after crafting an impressive innings of 41 runs off 23 deliveries.
Star middle-order batsman, Ed Joyce, then failed to prosper as he found his way back to the dressing room after scoring only two runs.
Wicketkeeper/batsman, Gary Wilson, then forged a daunting partnership with his skipper as the duo took the tally to 121 runs before Porterfield lost his wicket after playing a formidable innings of 53 runs off 43 deliveries.
Later, Ireland amassed 179 runs on the board with Wilson, losing his wicket after scoring 30 runs.
Needing 180 runs to win in 20 overs, Uganda required a steady start to their innings; however, with only a run on the board they lost the services of opener, Arthur Kyobe, who fell on nil.
With only ten runs on the board, the side suffered the loss of their second wicket, when Frank Nsubuga perished on a tally of four.
The Irish bowling proved just too good for Uganda to counter as the batting side kept losing wickets and faltered on 97 runs in 19.5 overs.
From Ireland, spinner George Dockrell, did maximum damage as he nabbed three wickets, paralyzing the Uganda batting line-up.
KJ O'Brien, who hammered an unbeaten innings of 39 runs and dismissed two Uganda batsmen, was named as the Player of the Match.
