http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 victory against England – Irish political leaders praise national team
The Irish political leaders have sent their congratulations to the national cricket team for defeating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in a sensational match of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011 in the Subcontinent.
The First Minister of Ireland and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Robinson-c81902 said, “This is an outstanding achievement by the Irish cricket team. To defeat one of the best sides in the world by chasing down a runs total of over 300 is quite
remarkable. Kevin O'Brien's stunning century, the fastest in the history of the Cricket World Cup, must rank as one of the greatest individual performances in the history of Irish sport.”
It was not just the First Minister who was awestruck by his country’s greatest achievement in the game of cricket at such a high level, but the deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was equally impressed and lauded his country’s team for a performance
that deserves a standing ovation. McGuiness admitted that their recent victory was bigger than their win over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in the ICC World Cup 2007.
Wishing his team the best for the remaining matches of the tournament he said, “I would both like to congratulate the whole team and all involved with Cricket Ireland. I hope that this victory will lead to further success in the tournament.”
Ireland’s Sports Minister Nelson McCausland also had words of acknowledgement for the national team and termed the victory as a historic moment for cricket in Ireland. He also gave credit to Kevin O’Brien for steering the team to victory by playing superbly
against a resilient opposition which is being tipped as one of the favourites to win the tournament.
O’Brien single-handedly won the game for Ireland by scoring the fastest century of World Cup history from just 50 balls. The flamboyant batsman started hitting the English bowlers early on, playing a quickfire innings of 113 runs (63 balls) before losing
his wicket while attempting a run.
O’Brien pulverised the 2010-11 Ashes winning bowling attack which looked helpless against him. His father who had captained Ireland in the 60’s and 70’s was present at the Bangalore cricket stadium in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 with his wife to watch his son play an innings
of a lifetime.
With this victory Ireland have also become the first team to successfully chase such a humongous total (328) in the history of World Cups. The Irish have twice shown that they are an emerging power in the world of cricket in two consecutive World Cups which
should be enough for other teams to start considering them as a potential threat.
