Ireland whitewash Russia by 4-0 in FIH Champions Challenge II
Ireland defeated their Russian counter-parts by 4-0 in their final match at the group stages in Pool B on Tuesday, July 5, FIH Champions Challenge II tournament being played in Lille, France.
The Irish men dominated the entire match from the first whistle until the end and scored twice in each half. They Irish men played some awesome hockey throughout the match and outclassed the Russians in each and every aspect of the game. Whether it was attack
or defence the Irish men were really brilliant in their strategy and game plan.
The Russians seemed no match for them throughout the entire match. In both of the halves the Irish men beautifully displayed a classy stick work along with perfect passing and some dribbling and dodging skills. The game was played in full flow that led the
Irish men to an important victory.
The first half started with an early action by the Irish side when they got an early lead just in the starting moments of the match, while in the later part of the first half they managed to double it. It was in the sixth minute when the Irish men opened
their account and took the early lead. Watt received a pass from Ames, who beautifully ran through the Russian defence before guiding the ball back towards him and Watt made no mistake in converting the ball into the first goal. The Irish men did not stop
their efforts after the first goal and consistently continued pressurising the Russians. In the 24th minute the Irish men once again found the Russian net when Cargo offered the final touch to a pass from Caruth and doubled the Irish lead. The score
was 2-0 at the interval.
The second half too belonged to Ireland and they also made double strike in the last 35 minutes. They scored their third goal of the match in the 44th minute, when Magee delivered his effort on a wonderful pass from Ames and tripled their lead
in the start of the second half. After that the Irish side too dominated the game till the end and kept up their scoring habit and they scored their final goal of the match eight minutes before the end of the play, when Blakeney converted a penalty-corner
into a splendid goal in 62nd minute. The match ended at 4-0 to Ireland.
