Ireland women’s team defeat experimental Scotland team by 6-0: Women Hockey Recap
The Irish women hockey team defeated the Scottish women’s untried hockey squad by a huge margin of 6-0 and thus took the revenge of their yesterday’s match which they lost to Scotland by 1-0.
The coach of the Irish side, Muller, seemed very pleased at this victory just before the start of Champions Challenge 1.
“We played with intensity and good technical execution today; we combined well to score some great team goals. This tournament was a fantastic lead into the Champions Challenge 1 which is taking place in Dublin at the end of the month”, Irish coach,
Muller stated after the match.
The Irish women played a very balanced and attacking hockey in both of the halves scoring three goals in each half. Jean McDonnell was the star performer for Ireland with an excellent hat-trick.
The Irish team started the play with a lot of aggression and from the starting moments they maintained a good control over the ball by keeping it in Scottish circle. They showed their intensions from the start of the play that there would not be any
mercy for the un-experienced Scottish side.
In the initial twenty minutes the Irish women managed to make a double strike when Jean McDonnell scored two astonishing goals within no time. She displayed a fabulous stick work and dribbling skills which formed both of the goals, in fact immaculate
efforts by McDonnell.
The Irish women did not stop their raid and continuously made penetrations inside the Scottish circle. The result was obvious in the shape of third goal. A few minutes before the end of first half, Emma Smyth tripled the lead and put her team way ahead
of Scotland. She scored the goal on a rebound shot which McDonnell initially hit on the goal post. The first half ended at 3-0 to the Irish women.
The second half was also the facsimile of the first half, McDonnell, once again, broke through the defence-line of Scotland and scored her hat-trick goal with the help of Emma Smyth in the 40th minute. Just three minutes after
McDonnell’s third goal, Michelle Harvey made her contribution to the score board on a penalty corner. Her trade mark low drag flick earned her the fifth goal of the match. Alex Speers, the skipper, scored the final goal of the match, almost a brilliant single
handled effort. The final score was 6-0 to Ireland.
