Ireland’s Damien McGrane in the lead at the Ballantine’s Championship – Golf news
Ireland’s Damien McGrane is leading the Ballantine’s Championship taking place at the Blackstone Golf Club in Korea.
Making an amazing start in the opening round, Lee Westwood is trailing the leader by six shots after double bogeying his final hole.
The Irish golfer, McGrane has not won a tournament since the China Open in 2008 and really rose from the ashes in the opening round of the Ballantine’s Championship. The player started off really well making two back to back birdies on the second and third
holes. The bogey on the fifth hole broke the player’s momentum but he came right back with a birdie on the sixth and then the eighth holes.
The back-nine were impressive as well as McGrane posted birdies on the 12th, 14th and 16th holes. Making a bogey on the 17th hole, Damien McGrane ended well as he carded his eighth birdie of the day on the 18th
hole.
“I made plenty of birdies and I putted nicely,” McGrane said. “I holed everything inside 15 feet. I made two bogeys which were out of nowhere really but that's golf I suppose. The fairways are generous and, just like last week; you make birdies on day one
and keep going till the end of the tournament.”
Posting a six under par, McGrane is now leading Chile’s Felipe Aguilar, Park Sang-Hyun and England’s Richard Finch. Finch was very happy with his performance as he made five birdies and only one bogey. He said that he felt like he got out of the right side
of the bed and things actually went his way.
The new world number one Lee Westwood started off well by making a birdie on the 18th hole as he started from the back-nine. Making two birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, the player made a bogey on the 17th.
Things were still in reach until Westwood made a double bogey on his final hole and dropped down to a tie for a 36th place on the leader board. Making a score of even par in the opening round, the recent Indonesian Masters winner still has three
days to fight his way back to the top.
