Ireland’s Graeme McDowell feels confident of winning the WGC Accenture Match Play
Ireland’s Graeme McDowell is confident of winning in second round of WGC-Accenture Match Play, which will continue from today at the picturesque Ritz-Carlton golf course in Arizona. The 8.5-million-dollar event sponsored by Accenture has already proved that
the format suits a few players. Two Ryder Cup members from Europe will be competing against each other in the second round. McDowell and Ross Fisher of England will face each other in the second round.
Defending US Open champion McDowell after his first round said, “Ross is a great match player and a great driver of the ball, which really helps a lot around this golf course." McDowell managed to win against Heath Slocum in his first round match, as he
is all geared up to play against his fellow European Tour member Fisher.
Fisher, who is recognized as a great player of the match play format, also won the European Tour event of Volvo Match play in 2009. He successfully curbed the challenge of his competitor Robert Allenby of Australia in the first round. The Englishman showed
his class and proved to many that he can be the best when it comes to match play. Ross won his match with an impressive score of 4up with 3 holes to play. Allenby was also among the players who failed to make it to the second round.
Fisher’s fellow countryman Luke Donald also looked in great shape in his first round where he comfortably succeeded over his rival Charley Hoffman. Donald won his match in a classic manner with a score of 6 up with five holes to play, as he has been tied
for ninth since the past two years at this tournament and will be looking forward to improve his position.
Donald will be paired up against the Italian Edoardo Molinari. Molinari earlier won his match the first round against the Scottish Martin Laird. The Italian star is confident that he will overcome the challenge of Donald in the second round, as both the
players were also paired with each other in Ryder Cup 2010.
The Englishman is playing his second tournament this season, as he took a long break and was working on his swing with his coach. He said that the break has proven out wonders for him and he feels more confident hitting his approach shots. He also spent
some time with his family during the break. Donald last played the Professional Golfer’s Association Tour Northern Trust Open, but failed to make it in the cutline.
World number one Lee Westwood will look forward to eliminate Nick Watney in the second round. Watney was the player last year who knocked Westwood out from the Match Play championship.
The second round will tee off today and only 16 players will make it through to the third round starting from Friday. It will be interesting to see how McDowell manages to take on some of the top golfers in the world, in the exciting second round of the
tournament.
