Irina-Camelia Begu bows out to Chichi Scholl in round two – Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012
Sixth seeded Irina-Camelia Begu was crashed out by the American qualifier, Chichi Scholl, in brutal straight sets at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012 on Thursday. She suffered a 3-6, 4-6 shock at the hands of the 19-year-old in the pre-quarters at this
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held in Austria.
The Romanian seeded star displayed dismal performance and eventually exited from the second round by Scholl, who is ranked 190th in the WTA Premier Rankings. As a result, the qualifier not only edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Begu
but also advanced into the quarter-finals.
Begu made a strong start at this red clay court event and drew the first blood in the third game to take the upper hand. However, she stepped off steam and lost the following four games in a row, eventually going 2-5 down. The Romanian held her serve once
more but registered a 3-6 defeat.
Ranked 61st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Begu sought her rhythm again in the start of the proceeding set. She earned the coveted break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead.
On the other hand, the underdog sought her winning ways and went on a five-game killing spree, subsequently going 5-3 up. She plucked her serve once more and clicked the set with a 6-4 success.
Summing up the seed’s performance, the 21-year-old committed more double faults and manifested a lower first serve share of 58 per cent in contrast with their rival’s 61 per cent. She acceptable blocked six out of 10 breakpoints she faced but capitalised
on only two out of three break chances.
The in-form American will move on to face third seeded Ksenia Pervak who trashed the local contestant, Sarah Gronert, in straight sets to set up this clash.
The fourth seed, Carla Suarez Navarro, also became casualty of the day. She was underplayed by the Luxembourgian star, Mandy Minella, in a tipsy-turvy three setter. The Spaniard broke her rival’s serve four times but warded off only one out of seven breakpoints
she came across, eventually enduring a 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss in their second encounter.
