Irina-Camelia Begu cripples Magdalena Rybarikova to reach semis – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Fourth seeded Irina-Camelia Begu devastated the Slovakian starlet, Magdalena Rybarikova, with a breadstick at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Thursday. She jolted down a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the 23-year-old to advance into the final four at this joint
tournament taking place on the clay courts in Acapulco, Mexico.
The Romanian blooming star showed top class performance to crush Rybarikova in straight sets at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event. Facing each other for the first time, Begu confidently advanced into the semi-finals where the second
seed, Flavia Pennetta awaits her.
Ranked 53rd in the WTA rankings, Begu smashed slices and forehands to pull out the breadstick in the opening set. After Rybarikova held her serve in the second game, the Romanian went berserk and bagged the following five games in a row. She dusted
away both breakpoints she faced and cashed in half of the four break chances to manipulate this exceptional 6-1 score line.
The 21-year-old kept momentum rolling into the following set and earned the coveted break in the opening game. Despite losing her serve in the proceeding game and exchanging a break, she stroke out the last four games successively to register a 6-2 success.
Begu saved only one out of three breakpoints she encountered but cashed in all four break opportunities to earn the glory.
Overall, Begu prevailed throughout the match as she spilled fewer errors and clobbered a better first serve share. She also impressively clicked 17 out of 34 points on her first serve share as opposed to the Slovak’s 10 out of 25.
Her next opponent, Pennetta, crushed the Colombian qualifier, Mariana Duque-Marino, with a bagel to book this spot. The Italian broke the qualifier’s serve seven times to manifest an assuring 6-0, 6-4 victory.
The top seed, Roberta Vinci, will accompany Begu in the semis. She kept her entire serves with brilliant defensive skills and capitalised on five out of nine break opportunities to seal the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 score line. She fired five aces and warded
off all four breakpoints she came across to pocket the match in under an hour.
